Wylde Chylde Records would like to thank AI Music Video Show (AIMVS) for dedicating a special half-hour block Friday night to the music videos and story of Shelby Rae McKenzie.
What made the block particularly meaningful wasn’t simply the number of videos featuring Shelby. Taken together, the programming told a story.
Shelby Rae McKenzie first appeared in the Wylde Chylde Records universe as an actress, beginning with Cody M. Brooks’ “She’s Poison Ivy.” That appearance marked the beginning of a recurring presence across WCR music videos, as Shelby continued taking on different characters and becoming an increasingly recognizable face within the label’s growing catalog.
Some of the earliest music videos Shelby Rae appeared in date back to the pre-Nano Banana era, when maintaining consistent characters from one image to the next was still a significant challenge. Looking back at those early appearances alongside the more recent work offers an interesting glimpse at both Shelby Rae’s evolution within the WCR universe and the rapid evolution of the technology used to bring these stories to life.
Now, that story has taken another turn.
Shelby Rae has moved from appearing in WCR music videos as an actress to stepping into the spotlight as a recording artist herself.
Friday night’s AIMVS block brought that progression together in one place.
Among the featured videos was “Great American Love Song,” the Cody M. Brooks and Shelby Rae McKenzie duet from Cody’s latest EP, Land of the Brave. The release marked an important moment for Shelby as audiences not only saw her on screen, but heard her perform as a singer.
The block also featured “When Cowboys Come to Town,” Shelby Rae McKenzie’s first released single and the first look at her upcoming album, Mountain Roads.
That makes the programming more than a collection of appearances. It captures a transition. Shelby went from actress, to recurring character, to vocalist, and now to recording artist.
AIMVS also premiered the teaser for the first installment of WCR’s new Artist Spotlight series, which focuses on Shelby Rae’s history of appearances throughout the Wylde Chylde Records catalog, from her first appearance in “She’s Poison Ivy” through her emergence as a solo artist.
For Wylde Chylde Records, that history is worth celebrating.
One of the things that has developed intentionally within the WCR music-video catalog is the ability for performers and characters to exist beyond a single video. Shelby Rae’s appearances have allowed her to become part of the larger creative world surrounding the label, while her transition into music gives that story an entirely new dimension.
Friday night’s block gave viewers an opportunity to see that journey for themselves.
From Cody’s Poison Ivy to Shelby Rae McKenzie, the artist and singer. From acting to singing. From appearing in someone else’s story to telling her own.
